Wine Racks are a Necessity

From little decorative spirals that hold one bottle, to the gigantic shelves that line basement walls of expensive restaurants wine racks can be found everywhere wine is served and kept. Other than making it really easy to store the bottles, have you ever wondered why they are almost always horizontal or some version of horizontal rather than vertical. The reason goes beyond aesthetics and is actually very practical.

Why Buy a Horizontal Wine Rack.

One of the most important reasons that wine racks are almost always horizontal is all about moisture. When you have a good cork in a bottle of wine, it will keep longer if that cork remains moist. A cork that dries and cracks will allow air into the bottle, which will cause the wine to go bad much faster. If you have paid in excess of twenty dollars for a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, then you do not wanting it going bad before you have a chance to drink it just because you did not keep the cork wet enough.

With no effort on your part, a horizontal wine rack will provide this service. The bottles lay on their sides, which keeps the wine touching the cork and the cork moisturized. So, unless you wish to have to remember to moisten your corks, it is a great idea to purchase only a wine rack that is designed to keep the bottles horizontal.

Wine Rack Styles

Once you have made the decision to buy a wine rack that is horizontal to best protect your growing collection, then it is time to decide on a style. If your collection is large enough then you may want to buy a bookshelf type that will store well in your basement. If not, and you are just beginning to collect wine for storage, then consider something small that can be used as decoration later as your collection grows and you find yourself eventually buying the bookshelf style wine rack.

Another wonderful solution to your wine rack purchasing dilemma is the type that stacks. This style is designed to grow with your collection and creates much less immediate out-of-pocket expense. These stackable styles are usually metal, but can be found in wood, and run anywhere from twenty to forty dollars per section.

Wine racks are a wonderfully practical yet important way to store your collection of wine. They can be as beautifully decorative as you can imagine or simply serve the function of storing your wine horizontally so that it does not go bad because the cork cracked. However, when you go to buy your new wine rack consider your needs and buy only what you need, because you can always upgrade later.
